Track Review – Figure 8 / FKA Twigs

Following on from last years great debut album LP1, FKA Twigs released ‘Figure 8’ on the new Beats1 Radio last night. True to Twigs’ usual style, it features glitchy beats, cold electronics and her unique vocals. Her vocals, once again drawing from her lfie as a dancer, much like ‘Video Girl’, takes quotes of photographers and filmakers, such as ‘You’re so fucking fake it hurts me’ and ‘Hold that pose for me’. ‘Figure 8′ also contains Twigs’ explicit sexual lyrics which always seem like they wouldn’t belong in another song, where the lyrics would come across as cheesy. Here ‘But I won’t give birth until you insert yourself inside of me’ is such a clinical and cold perspective of sex that it works to repulse and fascinate.

The production, taken over by Boots, easily matches Arca, Clams Casino and Blood Orange‘s production on LP1. It features Twigs handiwork all over it, as mastermind of her so-called ‘nu-R’n’B’. The stuttering synths twirl around each other, a sonic embodiment of Twigs herself, which is hard to come by when it comes to music: the music itself perfectly aligned with the musician themselves. It is a short track, clocking in at 2 minutes, but it feels considerably longer taking into account all that Twigs packs in. A confined experimental R’n’B delight.
