Big Thief had a great debut this year with Masterpiece, and have quickly followed up with another single. Like their closest contemporaries Mothers, they criss-cross between quietly spoken folk and a rockier sound, and ‘Dandelion’ falls into the folk more than the rock. That doesn’t stop strings tugging inwards at the seams of Adrianne Lenke’s vocals and plucked guitar, giving it an atmosphere of late, polished Elliott Smith. It has a fairytale atmosphere with the strings, almost classical Disney. The lo-fi-ness suits the band, as it did on Masterpiece, giving the effect of Lenke and a small orchestra cramming into a bedroom to record it on a dusty four-track. Get into Big Thief, and ‘Dandelion’ is a great place to begin.
